Six decades and six years of LASSB's impactful journey

For over six illustrious decades, LASSB has waged an unyielding battle to secure equal justice for individuals grappling with poverty in the vast expanse of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. In the forthcoming year of 2024, we mark our 66th year of unwavering service to those in their most critical hour of need.

Our Story

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." -

In 1958, a group of dedicated attorneys came together, driven by a shared vision: to right the profound injustices endured by individuals who lacked the means to secure legal representation in their quest for justice. At the time, a system existed to protect the rights of those facing criminal charges, yet there was no equivalent support for those suffering malicious, fraudulent acts that violated their fundamental right to lead peaceful and healthy lives. Drawing from their own courtroom experiences, these attorneys realized that the absence of legal representation could deprive vulnerable families of protective restraining orders, resolutions to consumer disputes, and defense against fraudulent or negligent actions by others. It was in response to this stark inequality that Legal Aid was born.

Since its inception, Legal Aid has unwaveringly provided free legal services to those in need, safeguarding their rights and empowering them to confront the issues that affect their daily lives. We’ve expanded our reach, strategically situating nine sites across the sprawling landscape of San Bernardino County. Moreover, in recent years, we’ve extended our services to select residents of Riverside County through specialized initiatives.

In our nascent days, Legal Aid’s scope was limited, with just a handful of attorneys handling cases for individual clients. However, as societal challenges burgeoned, it became evident that our program needed to evolve to meet the ever-growing demand for assistance. Through meticulous community needs assessments and collaborative partnerships with the judiciary and various community-based organizations, Legal Aid has developed an array of projects to ensure that we effectively address the most pressing needs of our community.

Our organization is steered by a Board of attorneys who bring a wealth of nonprofit management experience, spanning from one to three decades. This dynamic structure harmonizes the wisdom of seasoned experts with the fresh, forward-thinking perspectives of our younger members. Our board’s responsibilities encompass strategic planning, budget oversight, fiscal management, program and policy review, as well as diligent program supervision. Together, we remain resolute in our commitment to championing justice for all.
