Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time commitment to volunteer?
We will work with you to build a volunteer format that is both engaging and flexible to your needs.
In most cases, we do not have a set minimum number of required volunteer hours. Many of our volunteers choose to contribute a set number of hours on a weekly, every-other-week, monthly, or other basis.
What experience is required? And what kind of training do you provide?
While experienced attorneys are welcome, we do not require any special experience to volunteer. We provide our volunteers with a comprehensive training program that includes:
- Training sessions held by our experienced staff attorneys. Our staff are on hand to ensure you have the skills necessary to provide our clients with excellent support.
- Access to LASSB’s Resource Library, which houses our custom how-to guides and reference documents, so that you can build your subject matter knowledge at your own pace.
- One-on-one advising from our staff, to ensure your needs are met at every step of the volunteer journey.
Are your volunteer opportunities in-person, or remote?
We offer both in-person and remote volunteer opportunities.
Do you provide malpractice insurance?
Yes. All volunteers handling LASSB cases are covered by LASSB’s malpractice insurance, serving as the primary coverage.
How do I keep track of my pro bono hours?
LASSB keeps track of volunteers’ pro bono hours. Our Pro Bono Team can assist you with mandatory hours reporting for the State Bar, Wiley Manuel Awards, and other hours verification processes.
I still have questions. Who can I reach out to?
Please contact David Friedman, our Pro Bono Coordinator, with any questions: davidf@legalaidofsb.org.
