Care Court

The Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino (legalaidsb.org) is a nonprofit legal services organization committed to advancing justice and equity for low-income families across San Bernardino County. As the San Bernardino court-appointed legal counsel for CARE Court, we proudly represent respondents—individuals whose rights, autonomy, and mental health are at stake in these proceedings.

Our role is to ensure that every person brought into the CARE Court system is treated with dignity and fairness. We support our clients in asserting their rights, making informed decisions, and pursuing self-determined paths toward stability and wellness. Whether through advocacy, education, or representation, we are here to ensure that CARE Court doesn’t become another system of coercion—but instead a process rooted in compassion, accountability, and justice.

How We Support Respondents:

• Zealous Legal Representation – We stand beside every respondent as their court-appointed attorney, ensuring their voice is heard and respected.

• Education & Empowerment – We help respondents understand their rights under CARE Court and the implications of each stage of the process.

• Defense of Civil Liberties – We challenge inappropriate petitions, ensure due process, and safeguard clients from forced participation that violates their autonomy.

• Client-Centered Advocacy – We honor our clients’ choices and work to support their goals, not impose systems of control.

• Holistic Support Referrals – When appropriate, we connect clients with housing, health, and community resources to promote long-term well-being.

• Accountability Oversight – We monitor the implementation of CARE Court to prevent abuse and advocate for fair and humane treatment.

We believe mental health systems must empower—not punish—people. Everyone deserves representation, respect, and the right to chart their own course.
